The Story of Rapunzel

The story of Rapunzel (in a nutshell)

When Rapunzel’s mom was pregnant with her, she had a severe craving for rampion (aka rapunzel) which is a type of plant. The only available rapunzel was in the walled garden next door belonging to an evil witch, Dame Gothel. The husband scales the wall to steal some rapunzel from the garden. On his second attempt, he is caught by Dame Gothel and he begs for mercy.  She tells him he can have all the rapunzel he wants if he hands over his baby upon its birth.  He agrees out of desperation.  When the baby is born, Dame Gothel takes her and raises her, naming her Rapunzel.  She grows up to be the most beautiful girl with long blond hair.  When Rapunzel is 12, the Dame locks her in a tower in the middle of the woods with no way to escape.  When the Dame visits, she would call out: Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair, so that I may climb thy golden stair.

One day Rapunzel is singing and a prince rides by and hears her beautiful voice.  He returns multiple times to listen to her but he can’t enter the tower.  One day he sees the Dame and learns of her chant.  He returns to call out the magical words, climbs up her hair, and they fall in love.  He asks her to marry him, she agrees, and they plan an escape.

Each night the prince brings Rapunzel a piece of silk, which she is to weave into a ladder.  In one version of the story, Rapunzel states to the Dame that her dress is getting a little tight around the waist (indicating pregnancy) and the Dame catches on to what’s been going on.  She is angry and cuts off Rapunzel’s hair and casts her into the forest.

The prince comes that night and the Dame lowers down Rapunzel’s cut-off hair and pulls him up.  Dame Gothel tells him he’ll never see Rapunzel again and he jumps out the window, landing on thorns which blind him.  He wanders around and eventually stumbles upon Rapunzel who has given birth to their twins, one boy and one girl.  She’s singing and he hears her voice, they reunite, and her tears restore his site as they embrace.  He takes them back to his kingdom where they live happily ever after.
